HOW we SOLVED THE CHALLENGE CONCEPTUALly

Diana Turner, Bricolage’s Student Academic Interventionist, witnessed the most vulnerable students struggling to engage in the core curriculum. They were often failing to connect to “The Why” within specific lesson plans. She teamed up with Innovator’s Workshop teacher Alex Owens to design a literacy program to help students apply their writing and reading skills.

And meanwhile, students could develop their confidence and explore their interests. As an extracurricular sub-brand, BricoRadio needed an emblematic symbol showcasing the pride and community of Bricolage students turned podcast hosts and DJs.

How we solved the challenge visually

Since its launch, students have written and produced ten episodes with stories covering a wide range of interests: New Orleans sports teams, jazz music, fashion, African American leaders, and even edible slime.

The realized mark captures the inner spark of Bricolage’s students as a lightning bolt, an active microphone, or the spiral of the Bricolage ‘i’.

BricoRadio was recognized in spring 2018 when Turner, Owens, and a group of elementary students pitched the program to New Schools for New Orleans. They won the organization’s citywide design challenge earning grant funding to expand the program.
